Twice a year, our church holds a worldwide conference where we are able to hear from our leaders. It happens in the spring and in the fall and is very spiritually nourishing for me. During the afternoon session on Saturday, there was a children's choir and for the closing song they sang this song:
We thank Thee of God for a Prophet to guide us in these latter days. We thank Thee for sending the gospel, to brighten our minds with its rays. We thank Thee for every blessing, bestowed by thy bounteous hand. We feel it a pleasure to serve Thee and love to obey thy command. As the camera spanned those innocent precious children, I was so grateful in my heart that they (like my own children) have a living prophet of God on earth to guide them in these perilous times. As I watch and talk to people, I feel like morale is low. People are weighed down with things going on in the world, the economy, divorces, loss of jobs, daily stress, etc. The adversary knows exactly what he is doing in making people feel overwhelmed, breaking up families, and making it seem that all hope is lost. Some great counsel was given this past weekend by our prophet,12 apostles, and other leaders.
Elder Perry reminded us to dress modestly, live within your income, stay out of debt, and save for a rainy day. Spiritually refuel yourselves and simplify your lives.
Elder Dallin H. Oaks said that we live in perilous times as was prophesied by the Apostle Paul and we can have the gift of the Holy Ghost with us more by participating in Sacrament meeting and partaking of the Sacrament. We should arrive early, listen to the prelude music, dress appropriately, and concentrate on worship.
Elder David Bednar spoke of how our prayers can be more meaningful by recognizing our relationship with our Father in Heaven, expressing heartfelt gratitude, and praying for others. I really liked how he was specific in what we should offer in our morning prayers and evening prayers.
President Henry Eyring said "We live in different circumstances and we will come from different backgrounds into the kingdom of God. We see increased conflict around us. Those divisions and differences could affect us. That is why my message today is that a great day of unity is coming." He issues a plea "..for our hearts to be knit together in unity and love to each other."
Elder Robert Hales spoke of being a Christian and becoming more like the Savior.
And last of all, our beloved prophet, President Thomas S. Monson talked about CHANGE in our lives. (paraphrased) Some change is drastic but most change is subtle. Over time those little changes make us who we are. "This is our one and only chance at mortal life. Opportunities come and then they are gone. I plead with you to not let the important things pass you by. Find joy in your journey."
Amid all of the turmoil and stress in the world, I find great comfort in all of this counsel.
